R&D credits,
documented to survive a look.

Federal and Massachusetts research credits, computed properly and supported by contemporaneous documentation, because the credit that gets clawed back was never a saving.

At a glance

Section 41 credit studies, qualified small business payroll tax offset elections, Massachusetts research credits, Section 174 capitalization treatment and examination support.

Who this suits
  • Companies developing software, hardware, formulations or processes
  • Manufacturers improving production methods, not only products
  • Pre-revenue businesses that can offset payroll tax instead of income tax
  • Anyone who took credits from a contingency-fee provider and now feels uneasy
  • Companies wrestling with Section 174 capitalization for the first time

Qualifying research happens in far more companies than the word suggests.

The four-part test does not require a laboratory. It requires a permitted purpose, technological uncertainty, a process of experimentation and reliance on hard science. A machine shop refining a tolerance, a distributor building a routing algorithm and a food producer reformulating a shelf-stable product can all qualify. Many do not claim, and some claim far too aggressively.

We assess qualification before quoting the work, and we say no when the answer is no. Where the activity does qualify, we build the study around contemporaneous evidence: project records, time allocations, engineering notes, rather than reverse-engineering a percentage from payroll after the fact.

Qualified small businesses can apply up to the statutory limit of the federal credit against payroll tax rather than income tax, which matters enormously to a company that is not yet profitable. The election has to be made on a timely filed return, so it is a planning item, not a filing item.

Section 174 is the other half of this conversation. Research expenditure is capitalized and amortized regardless of whether you claim a credit, which catches companies who never thought of themselves as doing research at all. We handle both sides together, because treating them separately is how the numbers stop agreeing.

Deliverables

A study, and the
file behind it.

The deliverable is not a number. It is a number with a defensible file underneath it.

Qualification assessment

A written four-part-test analysis by project, before any fee is committed to the larger study.

Credit computation

Regular and alternative simplified credit calculated in parallel, with the base period supported and the better method elected.

Payroll offset election

Qualified small business election prepared and filed on a timely return, coordinated with your payroll provider for the quarterly claim.

Massachusetts credits

State research credit and the related incentive programs, including carryforward tracking across years.

Section 174 treatment

Identification and amortization of specified research expenditure, with the book-to-tax schedule maintained year to year.

Examination support

If the credit is examined, we defend it. The study is built from the start for that conversation, and our fee is never contingent on the credit.

How it runs

Assess first,
compute second.

Any provider willing to quote a credit before looking at the projects is selling risk, not a credit.

01

Project interviews

Two to four sessions

We sit with the engineers or operators, not only with finance, and document what was uncertain and how it was resolved.

02

Qualification memo

Written, project by project

Which projects qualify, which are marginal, and which we would not claim. You see the marginal calls explicitly.

03

Computation and study

Both methods modelled

Wages, supplies and contract research allocated with support, the base period established, and both credit methods compared.

04

Filing and file retention

With the return

The credit is claimed on a timely return and the documentation file is delivered to you, ready for an examination that may come three years later.

Credits

Worth claiming?
We will tell you first.

The qualification assessment is a fixed fee and comes before any study. If the answer is no, you have paid for a short, clear no.
